1. A Note from the Publisher
*****************************

Read about how you may already have earned a $1,000 scholarship towards a Master's Degree in TESOL.

We focus this issue on reading and speaking exercises for ESL students. Like anything else, speaking in front of an audience - even your own class- is difficult only if you don't know what you are doing. Practice, like learning how to ride a bicycle, is a matter of knowing what you are doing and practicing it over and over.

2. $1000 Scholarship to Sunbridge graduates
*****************************
Glengarry University is offering graduates of the Sunbridge TESOL course a $1,000 scholarship towards a Master's degree (MA TESOL). Tuition for the Glengarry MA is already well below the cost of most other graduate level degree programs at $5,600 US. Now, Sunbridge grads can knock $1,000 off that cost.

If you haven't already taken our course, sign up for it today. Your $325 investment is actually worth $325 PLUS another $1,000!

To register for the TESOL course, go to:

3. Tips for teachers: Reading Exercises
*****************************
If you are like me, you are always looking for more material for students to read. Eva Easton has some great reading exercises on her website. Check it out at:

For many more, go to Yahoo, Google or other search engine and search for "ESL reading exercises".

4. Lesson Plan: Online Speaking exercises
*****************************
Speaking is often one of the most difficult tasks we ask students to do. Even native speakers freeze up when asked to speak. It becomes doubly traumatic for ESL students who are asked to deliver an oral presentation in a language in which they are not yet comfortable.

Here is a good site that offers speaking exercises. These are geared to reducing accents and often stress one item such as pronouncing the final 's' in English words. Many Asian students have a real problem with this one!

5. Presentation Skills, Public Speaking Skills, Voice Exercises
*****************************
As ESL teachers, we focus on our tasks of teaching students how to communicate in the English language. When teaching oral communications, we often forget that there is a lot more to communicating effectively than using words.

"The Total Communicator" offers insight into breathing exercises that can help your students to relax and do a much better job of communicating. They say "You can speak only as well as you breathe. Control your breath, and you begin to control your speaking voice. Also, better breathing reduces tension in the neck and shoulders that can inhibit your best natural voice. The voice is a wind instrument.."

Go to their website and try the exercises they recommend to get your student voices in tune:

http://totalcommunicator.com/voice_article.html

Students can remove much of the fear of speaking in front of the class by following these tips:

Talk about something you know. Ideally talk about something you know about that your audience does not. Thus, you are the expert.

Follow this standard speaker's format: Tell them what you are going to tell them…then tell them…then tell them what you told them.

Use a lot of slides or visuals. Keep it to ine main idea per visual. These help you to keep on track and keep your speech in the right order.

Relax and try to have fun with your audience. Your audience will sense if you are worried, tongue-tied or well prepared. If you are prepared, you will also be teaching them how to do it well when it is their turn!

After your presentation, analyze how you did. Learn by observation.
How did your audience react?
Did you get your message across?
What would you change to make it better next time?
